Fertilization is an irreplaceable practice in farming, consisting replenish soil nutrients that are depleted by the very extraction of crops. Fertilizers are one of the main inputs of agricultural production, so that efficient use is a major source of savings and reduced environmental impacts.

Thus an excessive fertilization, not adjusted to the real needs of the crop, either by quantity, type of fertilizer or time of application can cause problems by leaching of nitrates, eutrophication of waters and emissions of greenhouse gases, plus an unnecessary which no affects an equivalent increase in production.

Similarly, fertilization insufficient entails not only a reduction in crop yield but also a loss of soil fertility.
